Parliamentary elections were held in Sequoyah on 22 February 1959 where Sequoyans elected 50 members to the country's Parliament. The Federalist Party won the most votes, however, Diwali Ustya of the Democratic Party was elected as prime minister as the left-wing coalition held a majority in Parliament.
The Federalist Party accused Ustya of fraud, and on 19 April 1959, the day before Parliament was supposed to take session, President Gawonii Atsvedy staged a self-coup, dissolving Parliament and suspending the constitution. A new constitution was drafted and new presidential and legislative elections were held in 1960.
