The "Imperial Red Star" (Quebecshirite: Étoile Rouge Impériale; Arabic: النجم الأحمر الإمبراطوري [lower-alpha 1]; Berber: ⴰⵎⴻⵏⴽⵓⴷⴰⵏ ⴰⵣⴻⵡⵡⴰⵖ ⵉⵜⵔⵉ[lower-alpha 2]), is the official national anthem of Majocco. The full anthem, lasts over nine minutes in its entirety over five verses, and is one of the longest national anthems in the world.

The national anthem was written in 1988 by lyricist Hamza Khilaal, and Jonas Mahdi composed the music in 1989. The same year Majocco gained independence from Quebecshire, Jonas Mahdi has led the independence movement composed the famous anthem to help with the nationalism of Majocco.

History

Composition and adoption

Jonas Mahdi (left) and Hamza Khilaal (right).

During the Red march, the initiator of the protest, Jonas Mahdi composed the famous song written by Hamza Khilaal to produce a national anthem of the new Republic, to replace the previous colonial anthem of Quebecshirite Majocco, in which was a remnant of the colonial administration, in use since 1989, in which Jonas Mahdi and Hamza Khilaal both composed and written the anthem due to the musical background and friendship between them. In 1988, Hamza Kilaal submitted a complete draft in which he sent to Jonas to compose his musical sheet for the new national anthem of Majocco, in the following year after the Independence of Majocco, the anthem was constitutionally accepted as the official anthem on October 11th, 1989.

Laws and regulations

The Imperial Red Star was designated as the official national anthem of Majocco by the Anthem Act 1989. Official versions of the song utilised a condensed version of the composition, with only three verses and a simplified chorus. On May 15, 1993, the House of Legislates proposed a change that would require uniformed people to salute when it was played, while others would just stand at attention, with men taking off their hats. The same rule required women to place their hands over their hearts while the flag was shown during the national anthem, but not otherwise.

On October 22nd, 1995, the legislation was altered again, requiring men and women to stand at attention and face the music when it was played. The change also required men and women to place their hands over their hearts only while the flag was displayed. Those wearing uniforms were compelled to salute. On April 7th, 1998, the law was simplified. men and women were encouraged to stand with their hands over their hearts, while men took off their hats, regardless of whether the flag was displayed, and those in uniform saluted. On September 13th, 1999, the legislation was revised to retain the same instructions but distinguishing between "those in uniform" and "members of the Armed Forces and veterans," who were both directed to salute throughout the play regardless of whether the flag was displayed.
