The Cortes Imperiales (Creeperian script: Ծորտես Իմպերիալես, Creeperian pronunciation: [ˈkoɾtes impeɾiˈales]; Creeperian for "Imperial Courts"), sometimes referred to as the Third Parliament (Տերծերա Պարլամենտո / Tercera Parlamento), is the bicameral legislature of Creeperopolis. The Cortes Imperiales consists of the Court of Hidalgos (upper house) and the Court of Corregidores (lower house).

The Cortes Imperiales was established on 4 October 1949 by the Decree Regarding the Imperial Legislative and Political Future issued by Creeperian emperor Romero I. The Cortes Imperiales replaced the National Parliament, the legislature of the Second Parliamentary Era that had been on hiatus since 1933 with the beginning of the Creeperian Civil War. The Cortes Imperiales serves as the legislature of the Creeperian government established by the Catholic Imperial Restoration Council (Imperial Council) in the aftermath of the civil war.

The Cortes Imperiales' two houses — the Court of Hidalgos and Court of Corregidores — meet at the Palace of the Cortes Imperiales in San Salvador. The Court of Hidalgos consists of 31 members (known as hidalgos), one for every viceroyalty of Creeperopolis, and the Court of Corregidores consists of 384 members (known as corregidores), one for every province of Creeperopolis. All members of the legislature are appointed by the emperor of Creeperopolis who serves as the legislature's president. Both houses contain committees known as juntas that determine that bills the legislature votes on. The Cortes Imperiales has been in its 8th session since 2019.

The power of the Cortes Imperiales is limited, and political experts consider it to be the weakest organ of the Creeperian government. The legislature is often labeled as a rubber stamp legislature as it universally supports the actions of the emperor, the Creeperian Armed Forces (FAC), and the Creeperian Initiative (IC), the other parts of the Creeperian government.

History

Establishment

The Cortes Imperiales was established on 4 October 1949. It was formed by the Decree Regarding the Imperial Legislative and Political Future issued by Creeperian emperor Romero I a few days after the end of the Creeperian Civil War of 1933 to 1949. The The decree stipulated that the Cortes Imperiales would be a bicameral legislature consisting of an upper and lower house known as the Court of Hidalgos and the Court of Corregidores, respectively. It also required all members of the legislature to be members of the Creeperian Initiative (IC), a political party established by the same decree. The Cortes Imperiales succeeded the National Parliament that was established in 1887 and that had been on hiatus since the outbreak of the civil war.

On 4 October 1949, Romero I appointed the first 250 members of the Cortes Imperiales.
