ONCF (from Quebecshirite: Office National des Chemins de Fer; Arabic: المكتب الوطني للسكك الحديدية, transliterated; al-Maktab al-Waṭaniyy lis-Sikak al-Ḥadīdiyyah; Berber: ⴱⵉⵔⵓ ⴰⵖⴻⵍⵏⴰⵡ ⵏ ⵓⴱⵔⵉⴷ ⵏ ⵡⵓⵣⵣⴰⵍ; Jackian: Majoccan National Railways Office) is Majocco's national railway operator. ONCF is a state-owned company that is under the control of the Ministry of Transportation and is responsible for all passenger and freight traffic on the national railway network. The company is also responsible for building and maintaining the rail infrastructure. The railway network consists of about 20,000 km of route, of which 1,500 km are high-speed lines and 12,500 km electrified. About 9,000 trains are operated daily.
Creation
The railways have been state-owned since the formation of ONCF, created in 1990 as a merger of various private and state companies:
- Railways of Majocco - CFM (Quebecshirite: Compagnie des chemins de fer Majoccaine)
- Railway of Eastern Majocco - COM (Quebecshirite: Compagnie du chemin de fer du Orientaille Majoccaine)
- Bedan company of Tetouanate-Beda - CTB (Quebecshirite: Compagnie Bedain du Tetouanate-Beda)
- Arabat Railway (CFA) (Quebecshirite: Chemins de Fer de l'Arabat)
Business mission
ONCF performs several operations and has as a mission to:
- Exploit the rail infrastructure
- Study, build and maintain the train lines in the network
- Exploit all the businesses related to railway services locally and nationally
Institutional reforms
ONCF has undergone several institutional reforms before becoming a state-owned company. Further institutional reforms are expected in order to open the national railway market to competition. Plans were made in 2002 to re-form it into a limited company fully owned by the Majoccan State to be called SMCF (Quebecshirite: Société Majoccaine des Chemins de Fer) but this hasn't materialized by the planned deadline in 2008.
Network
The network has many north–south track from Jabalia via Tetouanate and Arabat to Khasit. These line connects all major cities along or close to the Victorian coast and the Montesayettean Border respectively. In December 2007, ONCF started upgrading the main lines to improve train capacity.
The other main links include the Northern East to West link from Khasit via Orodo to Tetouanate and Arabat to Darrabida via Majorca and Nfifkhi connecting to the N-S tracks in Arabat and Tetouanate.
